Southcare Volunteers
Meet our Volunteer Force

Every Day Right Here in Florida and throughout the United States hundreds of elderly and disabled people go hungry. Good, tasty food is available to feed them. But we don't have enough volunteers to deliver the meals.

With just a small effort, hundreds of additional home-bound people can receive hot, nutritious meals. Would you spend one lunch hour a month to help? If you do, you'll make a difference in a direct meaningful way.

Southcare needs volunteers to deliver 10-12 meals one lunch hour a month. And more than just delivering life-giving food, volunteers provide a vital link to those they serve. For many clients, the few minutes they have with a volunteer is their only face-to-face contact with someone all day. By participating you can "Make Their Day . . . In 60 Minutes."

Southcare builds partnerships by connecting those unable to cook for themselves with those who are willing to help.

Most volunteers drive once a week, Monday-Friday at noon. Volunteers pick up their meals at a location near their home or office and deliver about 15 meals in the area. Delivery takes about an hour. Group volunteer opportunities are also available, please call our office for details at: (386) 418-8000

  • Meals On Wheels provides you training, an established route to drive and, of course, the food to deliver.
  • You volunteer your time and the use of your car so the maximum number of people can be served.
  • One lunch hour a month, you pick up a container packed with 10 to 12 meals from a Meals On Wheels distribution center near your office and make deliveries along a route that typically covers 2-4 miles
  • Sixty minutes later, you're back at work feeling great about making sure that several neighbors received a hot meal . . . almost certainly the only one they'll have that day.

Meet our Volunteer Force

Mike Zemon
Mike is our most dedicated volunteer.

Melanie Daniels
Melanie is a very pleasant young lady who has a strong desire to help others.  She and her friend from church Sister Jo, deliver meals all over Alachua and High Springs every Thursday or Wednesday.  They also visit some of Southcare’s seniors on other days just to give them encouragement.  Sister Melanie has been serving Southcare almost two months now.

Jeff Dunan
Jeff delivers meals for Southcare.  He uses Southcare’s vehicles and has covered long distances as a substitute driver when other volunteers were sick.

Robert Puzio
Robert helps deliver meals to the seniors in the community every Tuesday for an hour or more.  He usually delivers in the Alachua area, sometimes in Gainesville.  He uses one of Southcare’s vehicles.  He has been volunteering for over six months.

Judy Reed
Judy helps deliver meals for one to two hours two or three times a month.  She also helps fill trays with food and make other preparations in the kitchen for meal delivery.  She uses Southcare’s vehicle for delivery.  She has been volunteering for two months now.

Leslie Richardson
Leslie delivers meals for Southcare to South Gainesville and other parts of Gainesville every Wednesday.  He uses Southcare’s van and has been coming for four months.  He has a great work ethic, is usually early and very patient.

Jo Skinner
Jo is a young lady who really enjoys serving Southcare.  She and her friend from church, Melanie Daniels deliver meals every week on either Wednesday or Thursday all over Alachua or High Springs.  They are a ray of sunshine in the lives of the Southcare’s clients.  On other days Jo visits the seniors just to encourage them.

Louis Washington
Louis works with Leslie Richardson delivering meals every Wednesday.  They are some of the most faithful volunteers Southcare has had.  They are usually early and always find the places we send them to without getting lost.  Mr. Washington has a great heart to serve and is very helpful here at Southcare.
